 ABILENE PERFORMANCE CAR ASSOCIATION

The Shootout is held at the end of September/first of October each year. The year 2001 event marked the 9th consecutive year. It is purported to be the largest single day bracket race, held at a temporary facility, in the country. The club, dozens of volunteers and other organizations turn a taxiway on the west side of Abilene Regional Airport into a full feature 1/8 mile drag strip, complete with timing equipment, parking, pits, seating, concessions, etc. for the weekend. All proceeds from the race (after payment of expenses) are donated to the Rotary Club - Abilene Chapter.  There are 19 images on these pages. They are not large (avg 15K), but may still take a minute or two to load.

Friday, the day before the race. Volunteers and club members set up the facilities. The timing tower (the elevated brown building on the right in the right photo) is in position and the barricades have been placed. Bleachers are borrowed from the Expo Center and from various parks and ball fields around the city.

The left photo shows the timing tower, the tree in place and the track surface, which has been treated with VHT. The burnout box will be just in front of the black barrels. On Friday afternoon, representatives of the local media are invited to view club cars and hold interviews. In the right photo, a camera man takes in Andy White's ProMod. Rides are also given to those people crazy enough to get in a car with one of us.
Club cars lined up for the media. On the right, Joe Travis' car gets some camera time.
On the left, a camera crew setups up for an interview. Mike Dorsey (2nd from left), of the Abilene Motorsports car club, attempts to command the spotlight. KTXS anchorman Wayne McCormick (3rd from left) chats with Mike. The flamed UPS van confirms that you'll never know what'll show up at a race.
